its a vinyl sticker similar to the original but thinner, its held up to the rain for a couple weeks, its been wet, but i bet you are right, for the long haul, it is sure not to last. would sure like to find a way to finish the body (bumper fillers, and replace the woodgrain trim) without spending $2000, im saving for a new drivetrain as the next big proj. the lower end of the motor seems ok, but i will have to rebuild the top end so im just gonna buy a long block instead of throwing a rod in a motor with new heads in a couple years. then throw a new tranny on it and i could drive it from coast to coast without a worry.
this looks promising, they say it can be used on hoods and will form to extreme curves too, looks like each panel might cost about $20, not bad, might have to give them a call, will have to strip the old sticker off im sure as the surface of it probably wont bond to the new one
just about peeed myself a bit that was the brand name for the sticky vinyl junk you put in your kitchen shelves ...back in the day....
I was going to say that MACTac was a McMillan Bloedel (major Westcoast Forestry and Paper manufacturer) trademarked invention, and that's the only product most of us ever knew. But I did some digging. They aren't your momma's shelf paper any more. Pick a Continent: http://www.mactac.com/ This is the North American division: http://www.mactac.com/index.php?id=10 This little site lets you pick where to send it. http://www.mactacmarket.com/ Here's why its a big deal. These guys, Avery Denisson and 3M (Top Tier) all ship large rolls to smaller 'Paper Converters' (2nd Level) who then make up wholesale, manufacturer lots, or prepacked consumer products (3rd level). Soooo.... If you open up the YellowPages and look under 'Paper Converters', you'll find a few large firms in larger cities. If you cross-check with Signmakers or Die Cutting, you may find the same names. If you find some of the Paper Converters who offer Exterior Signage laminates or coatings, those guys will carry the stuff we use. The others are handling the product lines used on interior or domestic products or just labels and stickers. After looking at this new MACTac's lines, I think its worth an email to their sales folk and find out if they have Exterior woodgrain or carbonfiber vinyl. Product lines by format (rolls, sheetgoods, etc.) http://www.mactac.com/index.php?id=186 Technical lines by industry: http://www.mactac.com/index.php?id=96 They still do Momma's shelf paper, but they even offer Clearcoated products for exterior use. Like self-adhesive auto nameplate tapes, and gaskets, etc. hmmm... Anyway, when you go hunting down woodgrain vinyl for the exterior of the car, don't count on signmakers to know if their nice 50' roll of XXX is UVB and UVA protected or if the adhesive backing goes on with the heat gun. You'll need to check the product specs or ask for the product number and manufacturer and check on their website. Brown is a mixed color made with a high proportion of red pigments. Red is the easiest color to fade in the Sun. Blue is a close second. Dark browns can have a lot of blue. Now that MACtac are doing automotive stuff, it might be useful to pick their brains and get some info and local vendor info, EH? EDIT: Just sent them an email. I'll post their reply in this thread.
well me and a buddy finished it off last night, looks real good. it took 3 15 foot rolls, i will have to post pictures. hopefully it will last ok, but at 15 bucks i cant complain.
Doin' stuff yourself... You have more(and bigger)[BasketBalls] than I do...But, Good on ya'. I just got a 83 Ragal Estate, nice but needs some 'stuff', but still a daily driver. In fact, one of the boys just took off in it... Damn, I was wanting to go to look at some more 'stuff' for it today... Oh well, there is always Friday... Welcome and Later... Bruce
Ash... SWEEEEEET !!! Nicely done !!! And, by the way...what are the specs on those wheels??? I'm looking for 15s for mine...and those would about do it!!! I like the stock look on a WoodY, even a fake ones. Did you have to do the dash stuff also??? Later, Bruce
those are the 15inch wheels, i had to scour a junkyard and finally got my 3rd center cap just lying there by an LTD on the ground, my forth one i found on ebay. dash is ok, not even cracked, interior cleaned up ok, seat motors work but click and the seat doesnt move, luckily they are just where i want them (guess i can just look at it as an excuse to keep my friends from adjusting them) tha wood on the doors is good on the side but bad on the top, was kind thinking about painting the topside brown instead of lying that sticker where i like to rest my arm all the time. been thinking of trying to make custom bumper filler, just find some suitable plastic and the rear will be easy to fabricate, the front may be a little more difficult
Bumper fillers...??? The wagon I just bought has...(Don't laugh) copper ones, HOMEMADE. And they do the trick !!! Cheep and maliable(spelling). Once painted...Looks GOOD from here!!! So the wheels are 15x7s with a 5x4.75 bolt pattern??? Which car did they come on as standard??? I need to be looking them up!!! Thanks and Later, Bruce
not sure about the bolt pattern, but they took 15 inch tires and have 5 lugs. i think they were stock on my model. 1984 buick electra estate wagon. the lesabre estate wagon was identical to mine but all of them in the junk yard had hubcabs. must be an electra only option. I think you can buy these whole wheels online NOS but they are probably expensive. I had all my wheels just needed the center caps for 2 of them. if you got a huge junkyard anywhere that has plenty of 80's vehicles just start walking around youll find them the 84 electra sedan might have had them... regal... im not sure
