Some servers have an allocated bandwidth that can be used in a month (think the amount of data that is transferred to and from the site). It appears for whatever reason that bandwidth was exceeded.
If you look on the main page in the upper right hand corner, you'll see members online. this usually reads something like 2 members, 600 guests, and 20 robots. It's the latter 2 that suck up the bandwidth. They are just trolling for openings to insert spam into the forum. Each one consumes bandwidth as long as they are on the site. Too many can result in a denial of service attack and shut a site down.
I was thinking somebody didn't pay their hosting bill (but apparently that's good until some time in May.....)
Yeah. We'll see how long we can stay afloat without the captain of the ship. But I'll tell you all now, while we are currently up, that I have enjoyed interacting and getting to know each of you, and I wish you fair winds and following seas whenever that time comes.
websites are like cell phones.......if you run out of minutes, you up your subscription. Otherwise you get shut down until the next month when you start over fresh.
If it is a monetary issue then post up instructions on how to donate. I've had two other forums I frequent go down in the last year. In each case, the person who started the forum kept control past the point where they cared about it, but wouldn't give up control to anyone else to keep it running. Makes absolutely no sense to me. I see Wagonmaster hasn't been here in almost three years.
What would it cost to keep it up? When I was looking for host info, I saw something that indicated some sort of 'subscription' was going to expire in May. This was 'host info' on that company in Phoenix.
Oops I didn't see your Thread until I had started another one, ignore that one everyone. It was so scary to think that the site was done. So glad we are back...for now.
Easier said than done. Paying up to keep the domain name pointing to an IP address is one thing. We don't know where the forum is actually hosted even if we wanted to pay the bills.
And there is no way to "take it over" as long as the domain registration and hosting fees are paid on time. It's not that, it's that I have tried repeatedly to reach Wagonmaster and have had no response to any inquiries. Again, it's not at that point yet, just that Wagonmaster has ownership and control of the domain name and website/hosting. Without his being here, or giving admin control to submit tickets/etc., we are limping along. Steve-E-D had suggested back when we thought the domain name registration was going to expire that we start an email list for those that wanted to keep in touch. I have seven names/emails on that list from back then, so if you want to be added to that list as a "contingency plan", please DM me your email address and I will provide them to everyone that wants to keep in touch if the forum goes belly up.
Yep. Pretty much sounds like the other two boards. Owner loses interest and goes away and then something happens and nobody can do anything about it because the owner can't be reached or doesn't want to give up control for whatever reason. I'm all about keeping in touch, but those two boards had quite a bit of good technical information that you just can't find anywhere. Same goes for this board. I mean where else are you going to go to find Stormin' Norman fabbing up 6 cylinder headers for his Fairmont using 45 degree miter cuts on black plumbing pipe, or that guy with the '72 Catalina whose wife wrecked all of his cars and he is then left to slowly rebuild them, or Wixom's two door Buick conversion thread that somebody dredges up every five years to see if he has done anything on it?
