1953 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country Wagon for sale on BaT Auctions - ending December 7 (Lot #60,996) | Bring a Trailer
It is a very nice looking car that is not getting much love at the moment. I remember those semi-automatic Chrysler transmissions! Use the clutch to get it moving than just shift without it. We had aircraft tugs in the Navy that used them, and when I started working for Republic Airlines in Detroit many years ago, one of the hangar tugs was an old Navy model. I was one of the only mechanic's the auto shop forman would let operate it! I liked it as it was easy to put a plane in the tail dock with due to the front wheels turning almost 90 degree's. Memories, thanks for posting it!
Those Fluid drive DeSoto and Chrysler’s about dominated the Taxi Markets in big cities. The cab drivers loved that hi/lo clutch arrangement. They could operate almost all day and never have to touch the gear selector. I have a ‘49 Windsor with Fluid Drive and I love it. I can set it in the hi position and move along well in intermittent traffic. Of course it’s not gonna chirp any tires of the line, but as a Mopar friend tells me you could pull up tree stumps all day long with those damn things. Lol. Not interested in Chirping, or stumping, but it’s all the power I need.
