Proof positive that Fox-bodied Ford wagons are like US Marines - adaptable! In the last chapter, I mentioned and linked the first upgrade to door panels and seats from a 1982 Zephyr from the stock interior in my Squire, and then got a nice Chocolate interior from a 1983 or 1984 Baby LTD sedan.: Interior Version TWO: http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5783 One issue that I didn't do so well was the seatback on the fold-down seat, in the first upgrade. It looks fine, but it doesn't lay flat. Sooooo! HandyAndy and I went junkyard snooping last Thursday for my tailgate, and I spotted a 1986 Mustang GT with the 50/50 split rear seat. Mine are red and all apart, but I found this pic from a grey (faded black?) one: This is the current beige one from the first upgrade, but I have the chocolate backrest. This beige one was also adapted: The top one is the original wagon foam, I had to 'trim' the Sedan foam for width, but I didn't want to change the side bolsters, so it doesn't look bad above, but it doesn't lay flat by a few inches, until there's a load on the seatback: Seat back fold down rigid plastic panel: Well, the Mustang backrests are thinner and narrower. The fabric will fit properly and the back part is covered with carpet that extends to the cargo door. I can reuse my own cargo carpet. This Mustang was really crunched in the front, and hidden by a bunch of hatches and its crunch, so people ignored it and left another little bonus, the cargo hatch retractible cover with all the hardware. I might try to use that too. Not sure how I'll hook it at the tailgate end, yet. I'm gonna try to get the 'new' tailgate sanded today, and primed, after I get all the trim holes and wiper holes drilled through. The seats are an inside job for later this week, when its colder. Today, we have a high of 50 F, which is pushing it for spraying Rustoleum primer (it prefers over 55 F).
It seems there is a difference with the Mustang models. The notch-back seats won't work, the hatch-back seats do - mine are from the Hatchback model: http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthread.php?t=80667 I guess I could name the car FairStang or FairHeinz, or just 'Goodlookin'. The guys at the tire shop were kind of dazzled with the Mustang gauges.
Mustang Cargo Shade So that's what they call it! Anyway this is what my split seats look like with the shade open: This thread explains how to repair them: http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthread.php?t=37284 And this one mentions where the cover can alternately hook to the hatch. Hmmm. http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthread.php?t=81705
With the reclining front seat, I can get 10 foot eavestroughs inside! Just what a Fairmont wagon was built for.
