Turned the Outback into a woodie

Hello wagon lovers, have not been on in more than a year and it’s been 3 years since I sold my wonderful 1990 Colony Park.
Of course I still lust after ‘60s and ‘70s woodie wagons. and since I still have no room in the garage, I decided to turn the Outback into a one of none dinoc woodie. The pattern is GM dark walnut (on control tack vinyl) available from stripeman.com. I prepped the panels by cleaning with bug and tar remover followed by rubbing alcohol, making sure to get the door jams and other unseen areas that the vinyl would wrap around to. I then taped panels in place that I had rough cut and did the method of folding back part of a panel and squeegeeing the vinyl smooth then gradually peeling back the rest of the backing while squeegeeing the vinyl. I was very happy with the bubble-free results. Sadly I messed up on the driver’s side rear door panel and had to use a different vinyl with the wet method. Amazingly that dinoc is from 1970 and was used on Mercury Villager wagons. I was happy to be able to apply 40 plus year old dinoc successfully.

 

That really looks good. Have you had any comments while driving it? It looks factory

 

Thanks HRR and Grizz! No comments while driving yet but I just finished it yesterday. Did get positive feedback from my daughter’s friend’s mom though. This is my first time doing hinge method and second time doing wet application. In the early 1980s I turned a plain Jane Malibu wagon into a woodie using cheap contact paper and confirming the vinyl to the body panels with my hand. I did get a bubble-free result but contact paper is no good for outdoor use as it fades, shrinks, scars, and cracks too easily. Live and learn.

 

I like how you stopped half way up the fenders. You outta send that to the heads at Subaru. I bet that would be a popular option
