HMN vintage photo of the day. Grocery shopping at A & P. Check out the 1970s Caprice Estate at the far left. https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2018/01/29/pittsburgh-pennsylvania-1970s/?refer=news
The comments there say it's the Northpoint Mall on McKnight road which was also known as "McKnightmare" from all the potholes. They have a Container Store there now, I think they tore the old building down. You can look at both buildings in Google Maps if you find the right section of road that has images from 2007, 2011, August 2013, October 2013 and 2016. The part of the road I'm talking about is just at the parking lot entrance/exit.
What's that wagon front and center? Plymouth Volare? Here's from the '76 Volare brochure. The appearance didn't change a lot over the years. From the '79 brochure. Any change is mostly in the grille.
Finast, which stood for FIrst NAtional STores, was in the northeastern U.S. I remember them being in the Cleveland area when I lived there in the 1980s. It's not really correct to say it "closed down" so much as it was absorbed/bought out/merged with other chains over the years. Certainly that particular location in the photo may have closed. According to the web, Finast was purchased by Ohio-based Pick-n-Pay in 1978. Then a Dutch company called Royal Ahold purchased the chain in 1988. Eventually Ahold sold the chain, and many of the stores were rebranded "Tops" in upstate New York or "Giant" elsewhere depending on their new owners. Nothing stays the same.
Whoa thanks for the History lesson. I did a fb search and there is a finast page that says they are located in New York but there is no posts. Just like Ground Rounds, they disappeared from here in Ct, loved going there for my birthdays as a kid. The free popcorn, the awesome ribs and watching movies on their projector screens lol. Last Spring we are on vacation in Maine and we are about to go down a big waterslide and im like WTF does that sign say GroundRound. We went there 2x in 3 days and it was SO AWESOME!!!
There is, in the background, what appears to be either a Ford Fairmont or Mercury Zephyr wagon (2-tone, or with 'wood'), so photo is fall, 1977 or later.....
