I don't want to jinx it but...

If all goes well, I'll be part of the Station Wagon family (again) by Sunday. Stay tuned lol. I can say this will be my second Station Wagon. My 1st was a 1955 Ford Country Sedan. Low mileage original survivor. It was a very nice car but I had to let it go 4 plus years ago. Oh well, these things happen.
My wife really likes the big square body styles of the 60's. I am more partial to the late 50's but I have to say with a little push I started looking at what the 60's had to offer. The biggest issue is price of course. I was resigned to maybe finding a ratty wagon and quite frankly that doesn't bother me. Anyway, a pretty cool wagon (I think) popped up on CL. I admit there are some cool 60's wagons out there I hadn't considered and to some extent didn't know existed. While you wait in anticipation here is what I parted with a few years ago

I flew up to Washington yesterday and drove it over 800 miles home without a hitch. On the downside, my hometown was devastated by multiple fires overnight and today burning thousands of homes of which some belonged to friends and clients. I'll enjoy it later when things calm down.

I believe I'd rather have a hurricane. At least a few things can be saved.
I'm certain I saw a 1956 Chevy in one of the weather channel fire shots. Imagine in all of these disasters, besides human lives, the many old cars that are ruined.

 

Sorry to hear this one left washington, but glad to hear it went to a good home.

That is really sad and scary. We have a number of customers in the Sonoma county area, mostly vineyards and wineries. Many have lost everything.
I hope your friends, clients and entire community are able to rebound from this.

I was going through the vin, not expecting any surprises but got one anyway. According to this site, my wagon is a 9 passenger. I assumed it was a 6. I remember when I bought the wagon, the guy said he couldn't fit the spare in the holder so he put it in the cargo area. It looks like the whole thing lifts up somehow but I'm not sure how or for what purpose unless it was meant for a 3rd seat? Question, is a 9 passenger a 71E? Question 2, is it possible to order a 9 passenger with no intention of ever using it or having the seat for it? I'm just wondering if the cargo area had a different configuration from one model to the next. Thanks!

Congratulations on your '65 Colony Park purchase! Looks beautiful..

As to your rear cargo area conundrum, I can't tell you anything relating to the body style number, but I will add this:

In '65, Ford brought out the 'DFRS' - Dual-Facing Rear Seats.
There is apparently some confusion as far as their being a 'normal' rear-facing third seat option, as well.

In fact, this on-line '65 Mercury brochure makes no mention of the 'DFRS' at all. In fact, it specifically mentions a 'fold-down third seat'.

I believe that ultimately the big '65 Mercury was available with the 'DFRS', but it might have been a late availability.
What this all means, is that your wagon could have been configured in the cargo area one of THREE different ways:
- 2-seater
- 3-seater, with rear-facing seat
- 'DFRS'
