I actually owned a 1987 Ford Escort 2-door hatchback. My wife and I used it to go camping often. Had a turtle pod on top and removed the rear seat for storage. Went to Pa, the Smokeys, and even Florida. All from Illinois. We actually slept in it along I-65 in Tenn once. No further comment on other uses.
They guy that bought my 82 Cougar wagon admitted to me that he lets his girlfriends 17 year old son use it. What was he thinking!!!! We all know what goes on back in the way back.
I've 'done the deed' in a lot of cars, even including a Fiero and a '65 VW beetle. And a '66 Beetle. Oddly, never in a station wagon. Unless a VW bus counts as a station wagon, but that's really stretching the definition, IMO. Does on a blanket beside a station wagon count?
The rear seat bottoms fold forward to give you a headboard and there's 6 feet from there to the rear hatch. Also, the fronts go almost completely flat if you don't want to wait that long. Here's the 740 with a side-by-side refrigerator in it to give you some idea of how much room there is.
Maybe he was looking for the old ghost of a Fairmont Squire under that gorgeous Cougar wagon? Hi Steve. Man its been years, and now I have a 1982 Cougar Sedan LS.
If you recall, I listed my first car as a '78 Fairmont as a gift from my parents. I once threw my back out in the back seat, if you catch my drift....
Sadly, long gone. As well as the 4-door Fairmont I got from my brother. I've always wanted to get another Fairmont (including a wagon) but never did, and most died deaths at the hands of junkyards.
The only Fox cars I owned were the '78 2-door and '81 4-door sedans, the '82 Cougar Wagon and the '80 Thunderbird. I've not owned any since.
If you're talking about 'other uses', probably the best vehicle that we ever owned (that would be good for those 'other uses') was our 1988 Ford (Eddie Bauer) Aerostar. You could fold the second row bench completely flat, and slide it rearward to bump up against the third row bottom cushion - Wa La! INSTANT king-sized bed. Now, WE never used it for those 'other uses' ourselves, but our two young daughters loved it as a big 'play pen'. On a long trip, I'd let them unplug out of their safety seats for short stretches (in light traffic).
I just flashed on stringing up a net across the front of the flattened seat, so that if you had to slam on the brakes, they'd be caught by said net. "That was fun, Daddy! Do it again!"
