I'm thinking, anyone who goes to as much trouble as you have to make the readily visible parts so well off, they would not have ignored the drivetrain.Even auto mechanics cannot realistically guarantee their work past three months. There's so much that can go wrong.

You know, John....that car looks a TON better up close than it does in those block away pix! That top right pic on your site here shows the SHINE on the car. I didn't think the car shined by your ebay pix. Man...I wish I had taken pix of that car for a commission. From your site pix the car looks like a real winner! I'm liking that car a lot now that I can see a little of it.

Good ol' clamshells. I love these things, I've always wanted one! We were discussing them today after work with my freinds and I had to explain to them "No, Vista Cruisers like on that 70's show do not do that" LOL.

That underside is pretty damn decent too but I would get some oil on that underside ASAP before that surface rust turns into a nightmare!

For what he's asking for it that's not bad at all!

Hummm, if it only had a 350 & cruise!

    rust

I was talking to somebody on Flickr,of all places, about underside rust.About particle blasting with baking soda and several different types of coatings I've seen on Hotrod TV and Trucks. There's even one that's the automotive version of Rustoleum. You're supposed to be able to spray it right onto rusty parts. And it seals them off from the world. From one direction anyway. It also deadens road noise and keeps out heat and cold.

Well....if you sealed it from the outside...wouldn't it eat through the otherside? Let's say a quarter panel had bad rust on it and you sealed it up real good from underneath. Would it not just keep eating the metal through to the good side? I know rust needs oxygen but I find it hard to believe that anything will stop rust in its tracks. I don't KNOW this just guessing. And...you would have to seal it prerfectly so NO air got to it. No?

Rust is a fungus, like a mushroom or algae. The only way to get it out without sanding is chemically. Vinegar and Salt, Hydrochloric acid, and some other metal preps. Underneath the car is a real beast. Sandblasting with different fine powders makes sense, but if you can hold up a moist rag somehow for two hours or so, soaked in a vinegar and salt solution, you can eradicate it. Deep rust needs an abrasive though.

Once you get it out, most of the namebrand rust coatings (spray for tight spots, brushed for big flat areas) works like a charm. Excellent sound deadener too. Some are made specifically for rust and sound deadening and they're a tad pricey. No matter what, figure on refreshing undercoating every 3 to 5 years, after a good cleaning (spray washer - no soap) Soap is acidic and may attack the new coating and keep it from binding to the old stuff.

On the TV show Trucks,Stacy David explained that the best rust treatment is always done on every surface of the metal. The piece he was rust-proofing was the deck behind the backseat and if front of the rear windshield of a coupe. He took the piece down to bare metal on all sides. It was feckled with flash-over rust. Then he explained that rust is like fire;you need the three ingredients to make it happen.Water, air and iron. You can seal the rust inside one of these coatings(he said it,not me)and stop the rust from getting worse, because air and water can't get in.When you do it right...He gave the option of coating only one side of the metal(as on an underside)to slow down the advancement of the rust. It's not a total cure, just a big band-aid...To misquote BonJovi."Shot thru the heart, and you're to blame. You give love a band-aid." The implication of the show was, that if it's only minor rust,on the body panel, coating one side will lengthen it's life a great deal. But,that coating only one side does not cure the rust problem. As it can be exacerbated by spilling drinks on the floor, inside the car.Or getting the floor inside wet with most anything.

Well...living here in WI salt country, I have to say that once the salt gets under your older vehicle and into cracks and crevices....you are pretty much screwed. Period.

Spray the whole underside & inside doors, everywhere you can get with a heavy oil.

It's an oldtimers rust prevention, oil & water don't mix!

I've done that in the past, Clark. Done it to old cars but what a mess. When you want to work on them after that it's an oily problem. The smell hangs around a long time too. My dad did it to some cars at the gas station when customers wanted it done. Never to his own cars though.
