Metal Detector - Anyone got/use one?

Just bought a Garrett Ace 350 metal detector - going to the beach for a couple of weeks and always wanted to get a metal detector so I made the jump.

Anyone on the forum play with metal detectors? I'm going to go searching for buried station wagons....

 

Yes! Way back in the dark ages a bunch of camping friends had them so we had to keep up with the Jones', Smiths, and those other rich kids.
We used them at parks, historical sites, beaches, and other places we weren't supposed to be digging. Found lots of neat things like rusty bolts and pop tops. Once found a gold necklace but it was attached to a busty blonde at the beach.

 

I think that's cool, all ways wanted one since being a kid, and here I am now with out one still.

Last summer if any one remembers, I took a VW Bug to a local VW car show for a charity raffle for GSRBC.com witch happened to be at a beach. I got there stupid early so I could get prime parking. Well it was pretty lonely there @ 7AM so I went for a walk on the beach. I ran into a few early birds and a father son pair with metal detectors from the USA on vacation who both had metal detectors. had a nice chat with then (can't remember where in the US they were from) They both said it's a hit and miss but enjoyed it as a father son thing and had been doing it for years and now and then have found some real treasure, a real gold ring once. They found no treasures on our beach but they did put a smile on a young girls face about 20 yards away from me after our chat as Dad found 2 toy hotwheels lost in the sand and asked the Mom if the girl would like to have them.... It was clear that made the little girls day


OH, BTW.... I hate metal detectors...... I set one off when I travel at the airport, I'm full of steel!

 

I got my daughter one a few years back and we play with it every once in a while.
Never found anything good but a couple horseshoes on our property. If my
Dad sees us he comes out and drops change on the ground and steps on it for
Morgan to find. She gets really excited when he does that because she really thinks
she found treasure.

 

A buddy of mine and his brother enjoy metal detecting. His brother was once using a metal detector in a wooded area, and actually ended up digging up part of a Model T windshield frame. A piece that is now installed on his own 1915 Model T. My buddy mostly collects jewelry found on the beach, some of which is quite valuable.
But here in Virginia, most who are into metal detecting are Civil War buffs looking for artifacts. I've never tried it myself.

I bought one a last year and have not got out to use it yet.

 

Maybe you and Tedy should get together. You have on e, never used it. He wants to try it and doesn't have one.


jr you will share your finding pics with us won't you? Of course if you do the IRS will know about all that treasure you'll be dragging back home.

Are you going away to a beach or is there one close by.

 

Heading to Florida! Two trips - in February and in April. The detector should be here by this weekend - I'm going to try it out at an RV park by a lake here that is owned by the county. It's close to where I walk Jake and Elwood and there's nobody there during the winter. The weather is warming up here too so the ground should be soft enough to dig.

I've got one that I've had for over 20 years. All I ever found were tin cans and rusty nails, but I did find a metal toy once.

I found metal detecting was a bit tedious for my tastes, but if you've got nothing better to do than walk around for hours waving the thing around, more power to you.

That being said, back yards and farm fields ain't the greatest source for treasure hunters and a trip to the beach might have increased my enthusiasm.

 

I prefer walking the freeway for the MT Beer canz. Good exersize walking and dodging the crazyz that aim for me and at .10 per can deposit it's ah win win. Several tankz of fuel picked up for the Batwagon every few months just laying there waiting for me plus ah couple tankfill upz for me too

 

A constant source of income and fun for you. Find those beer cans. Cash em in for money to buy beer. Toss the cans along the freeway and find them again.

When camping and metal detecting I found out that all the bending and digging was work. As I got older the ground got farther down and the bending more difficult.

 

Cape San Blas - it's about 60 miles east of Panama City. It's a little peninsula of land less than a 1/2 mile wide by about 8 miles long. On one side of the peninsula is the Gulf of Mexico; on the other side is St. Joseph bay, an estuary that is great for fishing and scallops. No street lights on the Cape, no stop lights, no amusement parks, no bumper cars, batting cages, night clubs - it's great! At night it's so quiet and the stars shine brightly. I've been going there for 3 years now; I'd move if I could afford it!

I just had a thought... you've got a land yacht, a metal detector, a couple of old sea dogs and your going to an almost dessert island...are you part pirate? RRRRRRR!
