Taurus x

Well my brother in law totaled my windstar last week and now am in the market for a family vehicle and cant afford a new one so i will get something used. I like the Ford Freestyle andTaurus X . Anyone on here own one? Any advice? Thanks

Good vehicle, but stay away from the ones with the CVT......at least that's what I've heard. I believe it's the Freestyles that had the SVT. The Taurus X had a regular auto transaxle.

 

Yes, Freestyles had the CVT, while the Taurus X, which replaced it, had a conventional transmission. All Freestyles had a CVT as it was the only transmission offered.


I bought an '05 Freestyle new in June of that year and kept it until spring 2009, when we traded it for a sedan as we no longer needed that type of vehicle. It had 72,000 miles on it when traded, and we had no problems with it.

The Freestyle was made for only three model years ('05, '06, and '07), while the Taurus X was made for only two ('08 and '09).


The thing that everyone was always concerned about with the Freestyle was to make sure the transmission fluid and filter were replaced when called for in the manual. If you're looking at one but there are no service records and it's high mileage (100,000+), I'd probably stay away from it.

 

The other thing is to stay away from the smaller engine. It uses more gas than the engine in the newer ones. Beware, though, both of these cars are built on the Volvo V-70 platform, so some repairs can be a bit high.

Smaller than what? There was only one engine offered in the Freestyle for its entire three-year run, a 3.0 Liter V-6. If you want a Freestyle, this is your only engine choice.

The Taurus X came with only one engine, too, a 3.5 V-6.

If you're talking about these two engines, then "staying away from the smaller engine" means staying away from the Freestyle completely, which I think is an unnecessary concern. As I said above, we had an '05 Freestyle for 4 years and put 70,000 miles on it with no problems. Gas mileage was just fine.

 

Just something to think about..... When I was looking for a used Escape I couldn't afford a new one also, or so I thought. But after looking at used ( 2-3 years old) and what they were selling for with racked up miles, warranty almost gone etc I still would have had to finance 1/2 the cost. Then Ford and they all ways do it now and then have there zero interest financing and at the end of the day it was pennies difference in price to put my Honey behind the wheel of a new one back in 2011.

My disclaimer on this though..... What you want may be a bit to fugly brand new. I sure would not buy a new Escape today either because of the looks

 

390, I own an '08 Taurus X and I can't say enough good things about it. I absolutely love it. At the time, it was the closest thing I could find to a wagon and I'm happy with everything about it, the looks, the ride, the performance, the room, etc. Mine's an awd and I go up to Vermont quite a bit in the winter. It does incredibly well in the snow, very sure footed and I've never even come close to losing control or having it slip. I consistently average 20.8 mpg, admittedly more highway than city, but still that's pretty good, I think, for a car that size. I do have the 6 spd auto and I would recommend going for the Taurus X over the Freestyle for that very reason. The CVT trannies just flat out do not last very long. I had a friend with an '06 and he had to replace it at 60,000 miles. You can't get the parts to rebuild them, so you have to go for the better part of $5K for a replacement new one.
I say go for it; you won't be sorry.

 

I think the Canadian versions were available with a HO 351W, and we all know what those are capable of.

 

Hopefully i get a decent check from the insurance company for the windstar. There are some Taurus X's around here hopefully i can get a good deal.

 

What I meant was that the Freestar, with the 3.0, is adequate, but does not have much in reserve if you are well and truly loaded down. The 3.5 in the Taurus X is supposed to be much better. Then again, what do I know? I still prefer cars with carburetors.

 

2 members witch have owned one of each of these cars have given personal input witch is hands down IMO. I'd suggest along with that maybe have a chat with other owners of said car/s if you see one in a parking lot etc and owner is close by. All of what I have just mentioned helped me and confirmed my dictions re- my honey's Escape.

 

Taurus x --- Are we talking about those large prehistoric critters we see in museums and are found in tar pits?

Actually. I was looking at some Taurus X's on Auto Trader last night. Wondering if the wifey would accept one of these as a replacement for the HHR...... Only thing I don't like on it is the steering wheel, but I could live with it.

 

Used to like the mid 90's Taurus wagons. My 55 Chevy wagon has a Taurus 3rd brake light.
