For years a local mall all ways had a Saturday Nite car show, no entriy fee, just drive in and park. We have gone to see it several times over the years along with... while we are here, lets have dinner and while we are here, mite as well grocery shop before we go home... you get the idea, This summer I kept hearing rumor of the car guys are not welcome for some reason, but then to here all has been smoothed over. But late last nite I heard bad rumor again. We did not go but as there are 2 car shows this week end in town I'm sure the place was full..... This is what some one posted about last nites show...... http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/-I-Dont-Get-It-Royal-Oak-Mall_20164650 What happened to Cruise night at Royal Oak mall? Who is responsible for the very poorly handled treatment people with collector cars received Saturday night? Paying customers of local stores got parking tickets. The tickets seemed to be handed out in a very biased manner. (Collector cars only) I thought the problems at the mall from earlier in the season had been dealt with. My family shops at most of the stores that are open on Saturday night. We do not go there at any other time. To have this kind of disservice is appalling, especially since we have many out of town guests this weekend. I feel the shops in the mall will bear the brunt of the decisions made as I personally will not give that mall any more business. There are many more people feeling the same way. The owners of the mall should offer a public apology. Whoever made the decision to turn away business from the stores that have openly embraced a local Victoria automotive destination should be ashamed. I have not been there this year, but don't ever recall "trouble" with the car owners, no bad driving, no drinking in public etc. For a small place like ours that hosts lots of car shows every year, where people even travel from the States to attend and that's not cheep because of ferry cost, that's a big black eye to any car person.
Huh? Start a petition about the sign and the treatment you and your Car-Buds are receiving and when you get a couple thousand signatures Print it in your local news paper and distribute copies to all the businesses that rent space in that Mall. Betcha that sign comes down
Oh I'm sure the mall will be getting bad press, apparently it's been talked about this AM on local radio. .......I think the sign may have been added by the OP just to get your attention to read the ad.... Myself, if the ad did not have pic, and in this case one that grabs your attention, I never would have looked/noticed it.
We had the same problem here last year and the local cruise was moved to our local mall. Before it was in a shopping center with a Office Depot and the other stores made sure to come let us know at the last cruise allowed their it was Office Depot who complained. The cruise is put on by the local car club who made sure the parking lot was clean when we left etc. I am hearing more and more of these things happening everywhere and is a shame...by the way I haven't set foot in a Office Depot for anything since then!
Similar thing happened to our Saturday evening cruise in several years ago. It was held at a strip mall that included three restaurants, a take out Pizza place, and a 7-11, all of which benefitted from the extra business. The Pizza place didn't like that parking spots close to their front door were taken by the show cars when they wanted them for their delivery vehicles. The Pizza place owner complained to the property manager (probably only asking for a couple reserved parking spots). The property manager didn't like the idea of the car show but said it would be allowed to continue if any one of the businesses in the strip mall would accept it as their own event. None did, not even the management of the restaurant that had started the show years earlier. The cruise in was kicked out. But, a local Burger King with a large parking lot jumped at the chance for the additional business and the show has been there ever since. For that Burger King, its the busiest time of the week for them. The year after the cruise in moved, a couple of the restaurants in the original strip mall tried to get the cruise in to return, but it didn't happen and those restaurants closed down due to lack of business.
oh man Just last night, in Glendale(a suburb of Los Angeles),they had their Annual Cruise Night. Several blocks of Brand Blvd.(main street there) were barricaded off. Nice old cars were gladly welcomed. That was the whole idea. There are several other places, in the LA area, where Car Show Nights are held. In mall parking lots. The nice old cars are gladly accepted there too. Befuddled as to why some places are now spurning such things. And giving out tickets for parking in a mall parking lot where you're actually visiting places of business during your stay, just because your car is a nice old car, seems illegal some how. Definitely do the petition and the community activism thing. And hopefully, George Harrison's words will come true,"This too shall pass."
Yes! HAH! Poetic justice! It serves those businesses right! You can't drive your customers off and then expect to stay in business. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be an isolated incident. I hear of it happening with some regularity. When will these people learn?
Right after I got my wagon, I drove to the Treasure Coast Mall in Jensen Beach, FL for "Gweed's Gansters" car show which was from 6:00 to 9:00 on Tuesday evenings. I took a chance because the rear signals and brake lights are acting up. Not the first sign of them. After checking the computer, I found out they had moved about two miles south to the Chick Fil A. I never found out why they moved, maybe the mall complained.
Some Chik Fil A restaurants in my area have an employee that does marketing. They reach out to clubs and organizations in their efforts to attract customers. The cruise ins have been successful in bringing them regular customers. The Friday evening cruise in near me is at a Chik Fil A and you get a free chicken sandwich if you bring an old car to the cruise in.
Over 20 years ago, we had a Sonic Drive-In open in town and they contacted our club, asking us to show up on Friday nights with our cars to help draw a crowd. We did. We all ate there, and had a good time. As soon as business picked up, he told us we couldn't meet there anymore. We left, found another place to go. About six months later, they asked us to come back. We were too busy.
It's in our news paper today, Our Mayor in the city of Langford where I live has with open arms welcomed the Saturday Nite car guys and gals to come over here and hang And then there is us who never have plans, have plans for Saturday nite so I can't even go look and it's a stone throw away from us. Langford invites car enthusiasts for ‘cruise-in’ after Saanich parking tiff http://www.timescolonist.com/news/l...cruise-in-after-saanich-parking-tiff-1.561476
Smart move on the mayor's part. The local town businesses will benefit, and the businesses in the mall will wonder what happened to all their customers.
He is a awesome mayor! When we bout here in 2000 everyone thought we were nuts! "Stew" just became mayor, down town Langford was a run down dump complete with old school busses up on blocks, it really was that bad! He invited industry, stores, sports, literally bull dozed down town and started over. My property value has almost tripled yet my taxes are lower than my friends in over packed Victoria. And he is a car guy The classiest thing he did almost instantly was Veterans memorial park http://www.cityoflangford.ca/EN/mai...arks-trails/parks/veterans-memorial-park.html The lady is a replica from the memorial at Vimy Ridge France, where Canadians turned the tide in WWI. Even Hitler visited it and spared it during WWII.
In Langley, BC one of the more progressive firms, KMS, purchased a store that was formerly a House of Tools store. This is one of many branches KMS has in BC and AB. Nice people who own it, family business, great employees, the firm has really grown. At their Langley location several years ago, when it was still House of Tools, there was also a Coffee Joint - called Java Hut. It was filled on Friday nights with tons of cars, but the other stores including House of Tools did not want this. They complained to the landlord and ultimately it was shut down. Many of the car folks made sure House of Tools was aware that they cut their own throats as we were buying tools there. And to really miss the boat they shut down early on Fridays rather than stay open and invite all those potential customers in, maybe treat them to a pop or whatever. With the loss of business the coffee joint closed not long after. So, KMS moves in, they start Friday evening car shows. We've been to many including this evening and there are a ton of cars there. They do a neat thing - they sell hot dogs and hot sausage and pops and donate the proceeds to charities, and the owner/wife often is behind the table serving up the food. One of the issues with the old set up was the guys who just couldn't control themselves. They had to do smokey burnouts, drive stupid, and attract the police and the animosity of many of the stores whose customers liked the cars but not the driving antics. This seems to no longer be an issue with KMS running the show. They just seem to attract a more mature audience, and not meaning older, but people with more common sense and understanding that being able to do this and park our cars and visit with fellow car nuts is a gift and not a right. I know of many other instances where the show off's, the fools who are still in grade 10 mentally when they get behind the wheel albeit they're in the 40's/50's/60's ruined it for everyone by their antics. But, these are also the people who never do understand and in reality don't care, they had their moment of glory showing off and thats what really counts.
