Different laws in different States. I would just go to, or call, the DMV and ask who owns the Buick wagon with such and such plate number. If they won't give you the owner's name....do you have a cop friend? A friend that works at DMV? A private detective friend? These people can get the info with a click. YOU may even be able to find the owner on your puter...depending on the laws in your State. If they have a law that blocks the owner's name...it is usually loosely kept.

While it would be great to have the 'cop friend', I'm not sure something like this is worth his/her job. They can get in serious trouble doing stuff like this on the side. I only say this because I've been trying to track down the original owner of my car and have met with some hesitation when I've inquired.

However, what would happen if you accidentally bumped into it? (or almost) Take a beater car that has a dent, pull up close so the dent lines up and call the cops. Say you hit a car in the garage and need a report so you can pay for the damage. Obviously I'm not advocating doing any damage to the car, don't get me wrong...

I suppose you are right, teej. I have, however, done this numerous times. The cop in question, in this case, is only trying to find the owner of a possible stolen car or maybe the owner is injured or dead. Mike would just happen to overhear the come back. But, even that is unnecessary. It's not a big deal and almost impossible to get caught in some major sting. I still offer it as my best advice. Do some detecting....you'll find the owner.

So, if I gave you an old title number and vin, think you could find a previous owner?

Possibly, but, it's a lot more difficult than this situation. Here we are talking about a current license plate.

You could try calling the local non-emergency number, tell them you bumped the car, in the lot, and being there were witnesses, you'd like to meet the owner there for a damage inspection, although you see none, you don't want to get stuck with a 'hit and run'!! Leave your number, and you'll get a call!!

Silverfox, I agree... I've just been looking into all options. I even contacted a P.I. down here and he said he couldn't get the info. I've got one person trying to go through the archives, but have yet to hear back. If that doesn't work out, I might see if your friend is willing to look into it. I actually know the previous owner, but I'm trying to find the original owner. But I don't want to hijack a fun thread... Maybe I'll start another.

Keep us posted on the mystery wagon!

65 2dr.. Yep, that's kind of what I was thinking.

A Carfax should get you to the original dealer (if they are still in business) and they should have a record of who they sold that VIN to.

I wish it were that easy. Carfax doesn't seem to car for my cars... Their VIN doesn't seem to have enough digits for them. I should have mentioned that I'm looking for a car sold originally in 1966. The owners I bought it from bought it in 1968.

No trace at all back to the dealer?? Seems that there would have been SOMETHING left in the car or conversation between seller and buyer. It was only 2 years from the dealer sale.
