Our public channel - CBC is the only one that still broadcasts an Analog mode, for our area, until September 30. We've watched more movies, and no TV for almost 2 weeks! We even talk more about our plans for the house! I don't know if I want TV back at all! We're having a great time without it!

Ever since I switched to Netflix, the only TV I ever watch is the news. You can't go wrong for 8 bucks a month!

For the most part, I could do without pay TV. I just get it to make the rest of the family happy. The handful of FTA stuff I get on the satellite is good enough for me if I do want to watch something. For most of the years on my own, I never had TV.

One of my first TVs was a little travel TV. It was 8" wide and 10" long, could run off a cord or batteries, and had a "quality" 5" black and white screen. I had to literally wire it to my VCR.

I've been saying that I'm going to get the 8 bux deal from Netflix for years and still haven't done it?!? I guess the biggest reason is that I am old school in a lot of ways and resist change for the sake of change. Example: I bought one of the last analog TV's from Best Buy just before they stopped selling them. I was always a Sony guy until the last analogs they built were junk. I bought a Toshiba 27" because it was built like the old Sonys in side. It has the best pic I have ever seen and I will put it up against any new tech TV out there. EXCEPT...this TV has the worst sound EVER. The background music and presence sound is as loud as the speaking sound and there is nothing I can do to correct it. A real shame since the pic is so great.
Anyway....I didn't have a DVD player and I had a business DVD that I wanted to watch so I went to WallyWorld and bought the cheapest junk Magnavox DVD player I could find ($39)...just to view the DVD mentioned. SO....I would LOVE to do the Netflix thing but I don't know what kind of DVD player to buy and I don't want to buy one just for this TV because I MAY have to go the new tech route because of the sound problem with this TV. If I could figure a way to rewire different speakers into this TV...ones that I could control the separation...I would do that in a heartbeat.
I wish they just would have left things alone. My analog set has a great pic, albeit, I wish it were a larger screen. The larger ones didn't have the same stuff inside. And I wish I could understand what people are saying.:biglaugh:

there is the surrond sound DVD player option out there. when shopping for a DVD player to play netflix read the box and it should say or have a netflix logo. most of them are wifi so you may have get on the "tech bandwagon" and buy a wireless router. there is always the good old digital to analog converter (I got one for my parents, my father is ultra cheap. he don't even have a telephone) The picture is really good and they get more channels than the analog setup they had

Up in Canada, Netflix is only available through the Internet anyway, we don't get the option of receiving DVD's in the mail. I have not subscribed to cable in over 14 years, and simply pick up about 7 digital stations over the air with a simple roof top antenna. I have a modern flatscreen with a built in digital tuner, so it's easy as pie! I don't watch a lot of TV, but with the 7 channels, I get to see just about all the shows I'm interested in, and with OTA, the HD signal is not compressed, the picture and sound can't be beat.

I've been considering going to Netflix. The only thing I'd miss is the news, and my satellite radio stations,

TV? What's TV? We have a 60" monster sitting in our living room, collecting dust. Bought it for my wife in 2000 when she was bedridden. Actually confined to the sofa, never to walk again. When digital TV came out here in the States, I bought several of those converter boxes. We live in boonies and don't care to watch enough TV to pay satellite. Only had 1/2 dozen over the air stations before. Doubled that with very good reception when the digital kicked in. :slap: Then it happened. After annalog was over, the digital stations cut down power. We were left with only a few crappy over the air stations. Remodeled, moved TV to other side of living room, minus coax! Haven't watched TV in years. Believe me, we don't even miss it. Didn't even hook the DVD players back up. TV is an addiction. I am now addicted to this damned internet and wife reads. PS wife now outwalks and outruns me!:162: We have angels!-----I get the news and weather right here. Also watch educational things from emails, like Keeping up Appearances and Red Green!

-Thanks silverfox. This was way back in 2000-2001. Now she outruns me. She's too damned mean to just lay around. Besides I was losing too much waite from starving to death and leaving the clothes and house get dirty. And when I started chasing 21 year old Florida cuties in thongs she decded enough was enough and got up and began chasing me around the yard!:yahoo: What was this thread about?-Oh yea, TV or not TV, that was the question.

    No TV

Been without TV for about 2 wks now. Put DirectTV on " suspension" on purpose, saving about $75 a mo. And since the student loan in on deferrment cuz of taking a class....this little Custom Cruiser payment is DO-ABLE. haha. I'm actually getting more done... had done without, for 'bout 5 yrs before. Was old school too, figured if I had an antennae on house size of my CAR...I shouldn't have to pay for local. Had a guy ( called 3 tv shops) come out and tweak it. WORKED. Then digital threatened to shut it all off. Treated myself to satellite....now gonna take a break. Son's in college, so... Liking the savings....(y)

Digital was supposed to just be the modern replacement for over the air annalog. Don't know what happened here in the Florida boonies. Digital was as clear and the sound as good as cable or satellite....Until the annalog was cut off. Then seems like digital cut back power or something. We even bought a larger antenna and rotor. Plus larger coax. Moved the thing to several different locations. Still only one channel, and not too clear. Eventually just unplugged the sucker and never missed TV. We can watch DVD's on this computer monster and get news .etc. off internet. Between TV and phones, many people spend as much as a car payment! Even got rid of the nasty land line.
