DOUBLE WOW!! DOUBLE WOW!! Man, I'd like to see the window sticker on that one. Must be 2 pages..... OK - what are your plans for her? BTW, what was the original color?
Yeah, I'll admit it, that was kind of a setup. But, I figured I won't be getting another wagon any time soon so I might as well have fun with my intro. The original color was called Charcoal Blue with a Platinum top. (Dark blue and silver.) The door jambs still have paint that isn't faded and I'm guessing it was a sharp car when new. Plans are pretty simple... Get it on the road, drive it, fix it up, drive it some more. No major changes, but I will be swapping the single master cylinder setup for a dual version and maybe disc brakes on the front. The water pump leaks so I'm going to pull the radiator, water pump, and timing cover to check out the chain and gears. After that I'll probably put a drill on the oil pump, put some oil in the cylinders and turn it over by hand a few time before I try to fire it up. I need to pull the carbs and get them cleaned up, replace all the vac lines and rubber fuel lines too. And I'm still tracing down an electrical issue... None of my windows, seat, horn, blinkers, etc work. Which I think is actually good. One or two of those things may go bad, but the odds of ALL of them being bad is pretty low. I've been learning of a couple breakers that are built into the harness that I need to check out.
Other options... Heavy duty frame, heavy duty suspension, handling package, 7 bladed fan, 3.42 limited slip rear, 15" wheels, aluminum finned brake drums,... Invoice price back in November of '65 was $5987.20
I remember that car in that exact color combo and it was gorgeous! You may want to buy a gas station.
What do you mean?!! I thought this was the economy version that will just be running on the little bitty two barrel carb in the middle most of the time right?
teej, Oh my goodness, a Holy Grail car!!! Have you ordered the vehicle documentation from Pontiac Historic Services? They'll show what was originally on that beast. What a great find!
Ya Think!!?? Holly Crap, and Congrats!! That has to be the find of the year! First wagon ride I ever had was in a 66 Poncho, a Canadian built plane jane. Thats beautiful!
Actually, he'll need two. One at each end of town, so when he goes cruising, he can top up at each end so he makes it back to the other one My 455 when I had the tri-power on it was actually pretty fuel efficient. I think I even got almost close to 10mpg once. In reality, I was getting mid teens with 3:42's and a turbo 400, which for that combo was not bad. I still have the manifold but did a foolish thing and parted with the carbs. Now I'm in search mode for another set. Teej - that is one outstanding wagon to have and to hold till death do you part. With those options that has to be rare. Now I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight knowing there was one out there for sale and I didn't know about it. Dang.
Yeah - I want to hear the story about how you found this gem....... Also....... Been here? http://www.pontiacsonline.com/index.htm Nice site. Yours could well qualify for a feature article........
thanks for the website KK. I can see the rest of the night is going to be hard on the eyes, and heart. Oh well, it has to be done
These pages are from the brochure, showing the endless choices and combinations of options available in '66. For a Bonneville Safari to be ordered like yours, well, that just has to be super rare. But, ok, let's say there were others...how many survived? Even if your 1966 Pontiac wagon had just been a well preserved Catalina Safari with few options, it would be rare to have survived. For yours to be the most wonderfully optioned Bonneville Safari any of us have ever seen, and in pretty dang great survivor condition, well, that is truly what jmt455 said...the Holy Grail! :2_thumbs_up_-_anima David
