Obviously you have a gear selection problem. I think you may have to search the salvage yards. Hopefully it's a common part between Comet, Meteor, Falcon, Fairlane.

Good luck. Do you have the piece that's broken off? If so there's a chance, however slight, that it could be welded back together.

Very nice car by the way.

The absolute best solution to the problem will be to deliver the car to Ridgecrest and drive mine home with you. You'd still have a Mercury but without the door hinge, shifter, rear mat problems.:yup:

Oh yea. Don't forget the title.

I'm just trying to help. Plus he'd get shoulder harnesses, tilt steering, cruise control, good door hinges and a shifter that actually can select the gears and front disc brakes to boot!(y)

Just did all of that guys. The REV sent me all the parts for free.:D

I'll weld the column but I think i would burn through. I can get new ones but the yard might work better.(cheaper)

That's the Rev for ya. Generous to a fault. Glad to hear you're getting a handle on it. I was thinking with the new low power welders that it could be possible. But again the salvage choice is probably better. Less work.

What do you think. I have a Lincoln Pro 135. Its the style with 4 settings, not the better one with the totally adjustable dial, and it works well. Brand new with my 75%/25% argon/oxy mix. I guess this will be a whole other thread because i need to weld patch panels, totally fix the tailgate:)49:) and maybe put completely new metal where my spare tire goes.
If i don't burn through then its a go. My boss just gave me a 3/4 sheet of maybe 1/8 steel. This why i got the ok (from girlfriend)to buy a welder in the first place: to not have to go and pay shop time for little fixes. Now its paying off. What thickness of spool wire do you think for this job?

Oh, i forgot. At work they have a new Hobart 175 thats adjustable.

    Thanks. My dad had a 65" T-bird convertible-390 ci-sequential turn signals-side moving steering column- cherry red-coolness factor of 100%.
Use to start that thing in the garage and all of the windows would rattle in the house:lolup:. I wonder if i can fit that in my wagon(y)

also, does your t-bird have the 5.0 in it, was that available. mother had a merc. cougar, me think a 90's or so with it.?

I would guess that a 390 would be a very tight fit in the Meteor. My tbird has the 3.8 V6. My 82 Cougar has the 200 I6. I would think a 289/302 would be an easy fit as the S-22 Meteor had a small V8 as an option. I don't remember what size. Something like a 255 or 260 or something like that.
