Will there be any problems replacing my stock gages (87 Caprice wagon) with aftermarket (SW) ? I've done this in a few older cars but have no clue about the "newer" stuff with the computers. Will the computers be involved in this? I bought this wagon as a dog carrier but it seems the need to tinker has take over.....again.....after quite a few yrs. I know I can build the gage panels to replace the existing one but computers scare the daylights outa me!
Scares the heck out of me too, but the better gauge companies can coach you through it. Here's a couple EXTREME Dash systems: This one offers a one-panel screen system that you can configure into various displays: http://www.dashdaq.com/ This one offers both digital and analog panels or individual gauges. http://www.nordskogperformance.net/ Connecting new gauges into a car with an on-board computer (OBD or EEC) sort of forces you to buy better quality equipment, because the companies do give you thorough installation instructions. You'll have to ask about the sending units from the engine, for Oil, Temp, Amps, Tach, Voltmeter and maybe even the electronic speedometer connections. About the only simple one will be a vacuum gauge. If you feel adventurous, you could build your own complete panel with good gauges: http://jr.rustecat.com/articles/cluster/ Check out the main article page too: http://jr.rustecat.com/articles/ Here's a fine article on the issues of customising a dash: http://www.procarcare.com/icarumba/...a/icar_resourcecenter_encyclopedia_gauges.asp EDIT: This is a quickref glossary of instrument cluster tech. Check out the downloadable files too: http://www.florida50.com/tech-info.htm You should see if another GM make offered sport models with gauges and your engine. Saves money on the senders, and you'd end up with 100% compatible harnesses and connectors. Good luck.

Thanks Norm1 Excellent articles! I've learned in the veryshort time I've been on here that "YOU DA MAN" when it comes to finding all the good sites. The rustecat cluster is pretty much what I'm going for. The gauge panel in my Caprice wagon is 4 1/4 x 16 and it's flat. It will be super easy to make/replace it with a nice home built cluster panel. I'm thinking brushed aluminum. The info you came up with will get me started on selecting the right gauges and all the tec "stuff". After reading another of your postings, I'll also be adding a vacuum gauge also. I'm old enough to remember some of the "oldtimers" using those for tuneups. Just to old to remember it without a little nudge.
