I have a 92 roadmaster wagon that failed inspection. The emmissions are the problem. there is a strong smell from the pipes, it smells to me like its running very rich. The mechanic said that for $100.00 he will run some sort of cleaner through each injector, and he guarantees that will make it pass. What do you guys think?
Yeah, he'll run a bottle of $10 cleaner for $100. And you're the one who gets their wallet cleaned. Try something like Redline S1 fuel system additive. On a regular basis. And/or Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant, great stuff. For more oil/lube info than you can shake a stick at go to: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php
I know, but my inspection expired 2 months ago so I am worried I am going to get a ticket. He CLAIMES he will take the inectors apart. but who knows. If I buy the stuff you mentioned, I will still have to drive the car for a while, so who knows if it will work
Running a high concentration of alcohol helps. Ie a few bottles of drygas. That car is fuel injected? Run the codes at a local parts store. That should give you a better idea of the problem. Recent tuneup? Spark plugs? Fuel filter? PCV working? Those are all inexpensive (if you can do 'em yourself) And can make a huge difference in emmisions.
Look at the fuel spray Our 92 Buick with TBI had a problem passing inspection. One injector was not putting out a clean spray pattern, more of a dribble. Take off the air cleaner, and you can see the action of the injector while the engine is running. I bought two new injectors, they were cheap eight years ago. Friend said the old ones might respond to a bath in some sort of injector cleaner. You might try that trick.
